3D Turtle

  • 3D Turtle

I’m in love! I love this turtle so much! I’m so happy with how he turned out! I started sculpting him on the first day of my current six week hand building class. We were making pinch pot creations and I decided to go for a turtle and to make him realistic looking. I worked on him in the wet stage for about five days and then started letting him dry out. I let him dry for about five days before putting him on the bisque shelf. I wanted him to be completely dry because he’s fairly big and heavy – I didn’t want anything bad to happen to him in the kiln!

He survived the bisque kiln and then I had to decide what glazes to use. I ended up using the studio’s mint green on the body and shell and then added Amaco’s Seaweed (a little bit of Seaweed to spots on the body as well) and Obsidian to the shell. I was nervous about adding Obsidian – thinking it might get too dark. But I only added one coat of each glaze and even watered down the obsidian, so I was in the clear! The glazes turned out beautiful and I love seeing the swirls of colors on the shell. I’m so happy with the subtle contrast of color between the mint green with some seaweed on the body and the mix of colors on the shell. I love him! <3
