In early September, I took a Jack O’Lantern workshop at my clay studio and just fell in love with the process. We used the pinch pot method – two pinch pots put together make up each pumpkin. I love sculpting with this method – it gives me the chance to make a three dimensional clay object without worrying about thickness and hollowing any clay out.
We then shaped the outsides of our pumpkins and used bamboo skewers to form the indented ribs running from the top to the bottom of the pumpkins.
We used skewers and knife tools to carve the faces into our pumpkins. We all had enough clay to make two small pumpkins. I knew that I wanted to create a cat face on one and a traditional face on the other. Deciding how to do the cat face might have been the trickiest part of the workshop for me!
Lastly, we finished off the pumpkins with stems. I might have gotten carried away with creating curly stems on both pieces.
I enjoyed making these pieces so much that I went home and made more at home the next weekend. <3
I love how these two turned out – I think I might keep them out past Halloween – maybe until Thanksgiving!
