I started making these pumpkins the weekend after I took a Jack O’Lantern Workshop at my clay studio. I was so excited about the process, I had to make some bigger pieces on my own.
These were so fun to make – I always enjoy using the pinch pot method to make sculptures. It helps take away the worry about walls being too thick and I can create larger pieces in a faster time frame.
I had just enough of my red clay left to make three pumpkins. I tried to create different body shapes, sizes, and facial features on each piece.
I used celadons to glaze the pumpkins – Rust all over and then Jade on top of the Rust on the stems. I took lots of photos of the end results because the celadons look so different in different lighting. They are also so shiny and iridescent that they catch the light of whatever is around them – one of my favorite features of celadon glazes.
I love how these turned out. I like how they serve as decoration for a seasonal holiday but are also fun sculptures on their own. I can definitely see myself making more next year to add to the collection.
The stem on the pumpkin on the left was bumped when I was transporting the pumpkins in my car to the studio. Most of the stem broke off, but I ended up loving the final result because the stem looked more realistic.
