Ok, I’m trying to get pass the Darth Maul images that pop into my head when I look at this finished piece; but for the most part I’m glad I tried something new. New bigger mask form, new imagery, new use of bold color on a larger piece.
I thought I would stick with using insect/bug inspiration after my Luna Moth Masks, and go with a favorite – lady bugs. The use of the red underglaze as the central color is different for me – I tend to prefer cooler tones – greens, blues, and purples. The red is very red, which is good, but still a bit of a color shock for me – it’s so reddd!
Looking back, I think I wouldn’t change the red but probably carve less lady bugs. There are so many that I think the images are becoming lost and look more like a jumble of lines and shapes instead of individual creatures.
I’m so glad I tried something new and I’m glad to add to the Wall of Faces on my patio. This time of year is always intense as a teacher, so I’m thankful to have the energy to keep making art when I can. Also the color is fun and really pops against the yellow of the house. <3
This piece did include one of my favorite glazing byproducts – the clear glaze breaking blue over the black underglaze.
