So, I’m not sure how I feel or what to write about these gnomes. I’ll be honest – I’m disappointed in how the clear glaze turned out.
It’s not at all what I was expecting o used to seeing on this white clay body. It appears foggy or cloudy on some pieces and appears to break blue on other gnomes. I am a fan of the breaking blue but some areas are definitely white and foggy. The fogginess doesn’t look intentional or purposeful and covers the bright colors underneath. I’ve had plenty of glazing issues (as many artists have) on pieces in the past, and I always eventually get over the disappointment but it’s so hard to not feel frustrated and a bit stuck. I’ve spent a lot of time sculpting and painting these pieces with the intent of selling them.
I have a few ideas as to what may have caused the glazing issues but of course I don’t know for sure – I’m just guessing.
I glazed these guys in two different batches, hoping that would alleviate the problems I saw with the first batch. Maybe it was a kiln or firing issue? I was trying to problem solve.
It’s been a while since I’ve felt disappointed with my final results, so maybe I was due for a clay fail. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
These friends do look more blue than white fog.
I very well may be overthinking this 😉 My husband didn’t even notice when I showed him the gnomes. I did get to try out some new underglaze colors with these pieces – the turquoise and the dark green – I’m really happy with them. The next batch will be with a fresh block of clay and a new gallon of clear glaze – so onwards and upwards!
