I’ve been creating and carving male gnomes for over seven years. I’ve had several folks ask me to create a female version for quite some time. I finally created my first female gnome in the fall of 2020. This gnomette was commissioned by a friend for her terminally ill sister. The piece features her sister’s name and her favorite flower.
I was intimated by the creation of a female gnome – I had gotten the process for a carved male gnome so streamlined that I could practically do it in my sleep. I wanted the female gnome to look fun but not ridiculous – if that makes sense. So I decided to focus on creating curves, baby doll lips, and cute ponytails with ribbons.
In 2021, a friend asked me to create two gnome couples as special gifts for friends. Each gnome and gnomette represented a unique interest of the receiver, certain colors to match a favorite color or a favorite football team. These were fun to make and helped me become more comfortable with carving the female gnomes.
In 2022, I became more comfortable with creating female and matching gnome couples that weren’t just commissioned pieces. I’ve had a lot of luck selling these matched sets. <3
