In 2014, I was creating different animal 3D hanging masks. One of the animals that I love and created was a frog. My first frog mask was probably the largest and did suffer some cracking in the firing process. But I soon discovered a fairly simple process for creating the frog mask – two slabs of clay draped over newspaper forms with additional cuts and layering for the eyes. I used a small amount of tools to cut the clay and create texture. I experimented with different clay bodies and glazes but my favorites were a white clay body with honey glaze for the eyes and a translucent green glaze that breaks blue for the face. I also used black underglaze to bring out the texture details. My steam lining of the process created a thinner mask with less cracking. I’m really hoping to create a 3D frog piece soon. I have some design ideas in mind!
