I made a few more gnomes from a red clay body that I’ve been using for the past several months. These gnomes were made from the scraps I had left over when I was making my masks. I hate to waste clay if I can avoid it.
After sculpting and carving, I painted three layers of white underglaze over the gnomes – this is so the underglaze colors would pop. I then added the red and blue underglazes, everything was bisqued, and I added a black wash and a clear glossy glaze before the final firing.
I really like how these guys turned out. But the extra step of adding three layers of the white underglaze is time consuming. For my next round of gnomes, I’m going back to a white clay.
